Train One, Train Them All
Do you or your company train all of your employees the exact same way? Maybe with everyone coming to a training room and someone standing in front of them telling them how to do the task at hand…And how many tines have you had employees not ‘get it’? We all learn different, so why are we all being taught the same way? While some people can learn by listening, there are some that learn by doing and some that learn by reading, so how do you know which way your staff learns the best? Ask them…
Now I know most companies can’t afford to have 3 different types of training classes, so that is where you, the boss, comes in.
Once the training is over, you need to talk with each of your employees to find out if they have any questions. Do this on a one-to-one basis because odds are those people who couldn’t learn by watching, didn’t ask questions becuase they were embarrassed that they weren’t getting it.
If you have an employee that learns by doing, then set them down…and let them practice…while you are there to answer their questions.
Now if you have 3 or 4 employees that do better by doing, try to get them all together for a hands on training. This will save time and it might make some employees feel more comfortable sharing the experience.
So after the training, ask your employees on an individual basis what they thought and if they ‘got it’…if they are still confused, set up a group training for each type of learner…
A well trained employee, is a happier employee and you spend less money ‘fixing’ their mistakes.
